It is recommended that all players wear a HECC and CSA certified helmet. All certified helmets have a sticker indicating it's approval. A helmet should have a snug fit yet be comfortable to maximize it's protection. To size a helmet measure the circumference of the head with a tape measure 1" above the eyebrows. Use this measurement to determine the proper helmet size.

Facemask Sizing

With the helmet positioned 1 finger width above the brow, measure the linear distance between the helmets edge and the bottom of the chin with the mouth closed. The face guard should fit snugly to the chin. If it is to long it may come in contact with the nose or mouth during impact. When the player's mouth is closed the chin should fit comfortably into the chin cup. Attach the faceguard securely to the helmet according to instructions provided.

Neck & Throat Sizing

The neck protector should fit snugly, but not uncomfortably tight. It should completely cover the throat, and with the bib style, the upper chest area. Measure th eplayer's neck and match the size to the chart shown.

Shoulder Pad Sizing

  1. Measure the player's chest just below the arm pits
  2. Match chest size to the shoulder pad that corresponds
  3. Shoulder pads should fit snugly while the vital tips of the shoulder must be properly positioned under the shoulder caps.The bicep pads should not interfere with the player's elbow pads.

  1. Measure the length between the shoulder pad and the cuff of the glove.
  2. Match the player's measured size to the size of the elbow pads by inches.
  3. Determine the level of play. When fastened securely there should be no gap between the pad and either the biceps extension of the shoulder pad on the cuff of the glove. Players who wear a short cuff styled glove should choose the longer model of elbow pad.

Gloves should fit loosely, offering freedom, while still giving adequate protection in all areas. The glove should offer freedom of movement in all positions without chafing or restricting movement. Measure the distance between the fingers and the elbow pad to determine size. Replacement palms are available through Ocean Hockey Supply Co.

Athletic Supporter Sizing

  1. Measure the player's waist
  2. Select the protector or supporter with the corresponding waist size and corresponding level of play. Protectors/supporters should fit snugly, but not so tight as to cut off circulation or restrict movement.

Pant/Girdle Sizing

Pants fit less snugly than girdles, but should not be larger than required for unrestricted movement. To fit properly:

  1. Measure the player's waist.
  2. Select the pants/girdle with the corresponding size.

Pants should reach the top of the knee and extend up to cover the kidney and lower ribs. The molded polyethylene hip, kidney and tailbone pads and foam padding should cover all critical areas.

Shin Guard Sizing

Ensure that the cap of the shin pad is centered on the knee cap. The calf padding should wrap around the lower leg.

Measure from the center of the knee cap to the top of the skate. Then match the player's shin size to the chart to get a proper fit.

It's important that you get a proper fitting shin guard. A poorly fitting shin guard could result in loss of protection and possible injury.

Shinguards should be secured with shinguard straps or tape never wth tight hockey hose.

Skate Sizing

For a proper fit skates should fit 1-1 1/2 sizes smaller then your street shoes.

Toes should barely touch the toe cap while having no more then 1/2 inch of space in the heel. While sitting down, the skater should put skate on and kick heel back into skate. Toes should barely touch toecap, then lace up boot, the heel should be continuously kicked back to ensure a tight fit. When finished get up and walk around. The foot should feel comfortable with the rear snug and rest on the foot bed, toes should be flat!

A poor fitted skate can create bad habits and breakdown prematurely while holding back skating performance.

Stick Sizing

To measure sticks first stand without skates, hold the stick straight up on a flat surface, then measure the stick with the handle touching the tip of the nose. This is a properly fitted stick. A stick can also be cut to achieve a perfect size. Sizing up just as above, mark where the bottom of the nose meets the shaft and cut. When standing in skates, the stick should come to the bottom of the chin or just below it.

Goal Mask Sizing

It is recommended that all goaltenders under the age of 18 wear a CSA and HECC certified mask. When fitting a goal mask it should be snug but offer superior protection for the level of play. The goal mask should offer a good field of vision including blind spots. To fit a goal mask use your hat size as a reference leaving 1/4 of an inch above the eyebrow. All straps should fasten tightly so that the chin cup rests snugly against the chin.

Goal Chest & Arms Sizing

A good chest pad will provide protection in all areas including the collar bone, ribs, sternum, shoulders, and biceps. A good fit is essential in preventing injuries or loss of protection.


  1. Shoulder area of bodypad is a critical fit, shoulders should fit directly under the caps of pad.
  2. Arms should go into cuff of the gloves no more than 1 1/2".
  3. Elbows should be centered in the elbow cap.

Gloves are a personal preference but should fit loosely. Arm pads should be able to move freely and fit comfortably in the cuff of the glove. The idea fit for a glove should be something comfortable yet protective, and the tips of the fingers should be no more than 1/4'" from the end of the fingers in the palm.

Gloves are a personal preference but should fit loosely. Arm pads should be able to move freely and fit comfortably in the cuff of the glove. In catch gloves the tips of the fingers should be able to reach the 1/4' palm poly insert. The ideal fit for a glove should be something comfortable yet protective.

Goal Pad Sizing

The center of the player's knee should be positioned at the top of the bottom knee roll, with the pads securely attached to the goal skate and properly located on the player's leg. Once the pad breaks in, the kneecap will be directly behind the center knee roll.

To measure for a jersey take a soft tape measure and place it below the arms then measure around the chest. Match the player's chest size to the chart to get a proper fit. Jerseys should fit loosely, allowing freedom to move in any direction. When sizing for a jersey to wear over equipment it's best to go one size up from normal fitting.
